Officials from the Ghana Grid Company LTD. (GRIDCo), the French Development Agency (AFD) and the European Union (EU), undertook a joint site visit to the K1BSP (Ahodwo) to K2BSP (Anwomaso) Transmission Line Upgrade Project in Kumasi. The visit gave the AFD-EU Team firsthand information on how the project is progressing. The K1-K2 Project forms part of the 330kV Kumasi – Bolgatanga Transmission Line funded by the two financiers, and supports the strengthening of the grid for exports through the Ghana-Burkina Faso Interconnection Line Project.
Starting from the Kumasi Substation, the team visited some of the tower locations to inspect ongoing works. The Contractor, China International Water and Electric Corporation (CWE) and its workers were busy at all the locations visited. The ongoing works included, wet tower foundation construction and on-ground tower assembly. In all, the project covers the dismantling of a single circuit transmission line and construction of a 19km double circuit transmission line involving sixty (60) transmission towers between K1BSP and K2BSP.
Some of tower locations were described by the Contractor as “problematic locations”. These were in waterlogged areas, encroached areas and places where access routes were blocked. The team was briefed on all the measures being taken to resolve the problems to ensure the successful completion of the project.
Ing. Abdul Samed Ibrahim, the Acting Deputy Chief Executive, Engineering and Operations, led the project site visit. He explained the work done so far and the challenges being faced. Addressing all the questions and concerns of the AFD-EU team, Ing. Ibrahim emphasised the importance of the K1-K2 project to GRIDCo, the National Interconnected Transmission System (NITS) and all the major stakeholders; the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, the Asantehene, etc. “All the major key stakeholders are expecting a successful outcome from this project. We are, therefore, approaching this work with all the seriousness it deserves”, he said.
The AFD-EU Team was happy with the ongoing work and look forward to the successful completion of the project. They commended the GRIDCo Team for their support and supervision of the project.
The AFD team was led by Ms. Doris Agbevivi, Project Manager, for Energy Transition and Green Infrastructure, while the EU was represented by Ms. Agnes Duband, Programme Manager.
