A group of Engineers from the Ghana Institution of Engineering (GhIE) has toured the Volta and smelter II substations in Tema. The tour was part of the GhIE’s planned activities for its 55th Annual General Meeting (AGM), Conference and Exhibition. The visit provided the visiting engineers comprehensive knowledge of the National Interconnected Transmission System (NITS), and GRIDCo’s role in the power supply chain.

On behalf of Management, Manager, Dispatch Operations, Ing. Wofa Kwarteng, welcomed the twenty-three (23)-Man team and delivered an overview of GRIDCo’s operations, emphasising the dual role GRIDCo plays as a System Operator and Electricity Transmitter.

Ing. Aaron Tetteh, the Operating Supervisor for the Tema Operational Area, took the group through the tour, elaborating on GRIDCo’s transmission network and the power generation mix, namely; hydro, thermal, and renewable sources. Ing. Tetteh gave an in-depth knowledge of the relay equipment and the mimic board. He also highlighted the importance of substations in ensuring power stability and reliability.

In response to whether GRIDCo has planned for Ghana’s industrialisation drive, Ing. Aaron Tetteh explained that GRIDCo has a 10-year plan in place to address future demand for power supply. The GhIE Members actively participated in discussions, expressing concerns about the negative impact of encroachment on GRIDCo’s Right- of-Way (RoW), transmission losses, and mechanisms adopted to address these issues.
