A section of GRIDCo’s Management welcomed a delegation from the UK Foreign Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), led by Ms. Liz Patterson, Deputy Director and Head of Infrastructure. The field visit, initiated by the FCDO, aimed to acknowledge GRIDCo’s pivotal role in integrating Variable Renewable Energy (VRE) into Ghana’s energy mix, in partnership with the FCDO and the Green Cities and Infrastructure Programme (GCIP) which is being implemented under the auspices of the FCDO.

In the company of Ing. Francis Arthur, Director of Engineering, Ing. Mrs. Linda Baah, Manager, Market Operations received the delegation on behalf of the Director, System Operation.

The visit sought to provide the delegation with insights into GRIDCo’s operations and to strengthen collaborative ties between the two entities, following the successful completion of training for some GRIDCo staff in October 2024 on the DIgSILENT PowerFactory software, focusing on Renewable Energy Integration and System Planning.

The team later toured the SCC, during which, Ing. Wofa Kwarteng, Manager, Dispatch Operations, provided an in-depth overview of the power generation mix, which includes hydro, thermal, and renewable sources. He elaborated on how power is generated and transmitted in the National Interconnected Transmission System (NITS) and managed during peak and off-peak periods. “There is a lot of automation and protection in the NITS due to the critical nature of the equipment,” he explained. Ing. Kwarteng responded to various questions, key among them was about what accounts for changes in demand patterns. He highlighted factors such as, weather patterns and other significant events, including tournaments and holiday activities that influence energy consumption.

Other GRIDCo staff present were, Anthony Assan, Chief Information and Security Officer, Papa Kojo Mensah, Special Assistant to the Chief Executive, and other staff.

The visit underscored GRIDCo’s commitment to fostering strategic partnerships and advancing Ghana’s Energy Sector.
