GRIDCo Accra Area’s Ben Smith remains UNDEFEATED in 2024 Safety Quiz
In an absolute display of brilliance and expertise, GRIDCo’s Accra Area’s Ing. Robert Ben-Smith has retained his title and bragging rights as champion of the 2024 Interdepartmental Safety Quiz.
In his remarks, Safety Manager, Ing. Eric Koduah hailed the competitive and collaborative atmosphere, which the safety team promotes. He stated, “[it] promotes team building, network platforms and enhances the Business Acumen of participants.” On that note, he encouraged all to see the competition as a learning opportunity.
Eighteen (18) contestants representing various Operational Areas and Departments in the Company took questions covering a three-round competition. The quiz covered familiar safety themes such as first aid, fire, hazard identification and nomenclature. Highlighting this year’s safety theme: Exploring the impact of Climate Change on Occupational Health and Safety, contestants were quizzed on the subject matter. Following the success of prostate health awareness in September, contestants were quizzed about prostate cancer.
At the end of the competition, the Procurement Department, represented by Kelly Mbeke Tay, secured 2nd place, while the host Area, Techiman, represented by Apasu Dan-Yooni, came in 3rd position. Also making it to the final were Dennis Ankomah representing the Finance Department and Akwasi Asare Osei, representing Bolgatanga Area.
Ing. Koduah took the opportunity to emphasise why the 2024 theme is important explaining, “GRIDCo as an organisation must establish baseline information of its carbon footprint and map calculated initiatives to combat climate change.”
The event had august guests including a senior lecturer from the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR), Ing. Dr. Mary Antwi and Ing. Bernard Gyan, Director Technical Services. Also present were, the Techiman Area Manager, Ing. Lawrence Doe Zumedor, Major Lawrence Appiah (Rtd) Manager, Security and Right of Way (RoW) Protection, and GRIDCo staff who rallied support for their representatives.
Through this initiative, GRIDCo emphasises the importance of safety as a collective responsibility. The quiz not only tests knowledge, but also inspires a deeper appreciation for the safety measures that protect employees, each day.
