A collaboration between the Tamale Operational Area, (NND), and the Accra Operational Area, (SND), has revived and energised the 50MVAR STATCOM, (Advanced SVC), at Kasoa Substation.
The team, led by Ing. Nelson Awotwe, Principal Protection and Control Engineer of the Tamale Area, emphasised the need for constant collaboration between Departments and Operational Areas to harness internal resources to improve and strengthen the National Grid.
Currently, there are two (2) STATCOMs strategically located at the Tamale Substation(40MVAR) and Kasoa Substation(50MVAR).
This new development of bringing the 50MVAR STATCOM at Kasoa back into service will go a long way to strengthen the National Grid.
Other members of the team comprised Ing. Wisdom Adenyo, (Tamale Area); Ing. Daniel Laryea, (Accra Area); Mr. Eric Mensah, (Tamale Area); Mr. Mathew Arthur, (Accra Area); Mr. Michael Yaba, (Accra Area) and Mr. Ibrahim Abass, (Accra Area).

A STATCOM or Static Synchronous Compensator, is a fast-acting device that regulates voltage in power grids by providing or absorbing reactive current. It’s a type of Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) device, often used to enhance grid stability and improve power transfer capacity. STATCOMs use power electronics to create a voltage-source converter that can act as a reactive power source or sink.
Kudos to the team!!!
