The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Hon. Dr. John Jinapor, the Chief Executive of GRIDCo, Ing. Frank Otchere and the Deputy Managing Director of ECG, Ing. David Asamoah has collectively handed over the site for the construction of a 161/35kV Substation at Ho and for the upgrade of the 45km transmission line infrastructure from Asiekpe to Ho at a formal launch event in the Volta Region on Friday 28th August, 2026.
The project dubbed, ‘Rural Electricity Acceleration and Urban Intensification Initiative’ is a part of the Government’s flagship Big Push programme aimed at aggressively connecting unelectrified communities to the national electricity grid within the next four (4) years. Government’s strategy is focused on delivering power to four (4) targeted regions annually and to kick start the initiative the, Volta, Oti, Central and Savannah Regions have been selected.
The Volta Region Minister, Hon. James Gunu reiterated the importance of the project saying, ‘under the Volta Economic Corridor Project, we cannot do without sustainable power, [thus] I believe the measures being put in place will create jobs, new industries and go a long way to reduce cost of energy for agriculture and manufacturing in the Volta Region… as well as improve the region’s competitiveness.’
On his part, the Minister of Energy and Green Transition, Hon. Dr. Jinapor, acknowledged recent challenges residents have faced regarding electricity supply. He explained that once the upgrade is completed in the next six (6) to twelve (12) months, ‘these investments are expected to improve voltage levels, strengthen supply reliability and create additional capacity to meet the growing demand for electricity along the corridor from Asiekpe through Ho to Kadjebi.’
Government is investing GHC598 million in the project to demonstrate its broader commitment to investing in infrastructure that supports economic growth, improves livelihoods, and creates opportunities for our people, particularly in underserved communities.
Speaking on behalf of the Volta Regional House of Chiefs, the Paramount Chief of Kpando, Okpekpewuokpe Togbega Dagadu IX expressed the support of the traditional authorities saying, “With the incoming of this project, we expect that every facet of our lives would be improved. We want to say, we support the project. As chiefs supporting developmental projects is also part of what we do. We will do everything to extend the sensitisation with the support of our community leaders.”
Tilt Engineering leads the Transmission project contractor, while Byes and Ways Engineering are undertaking the line upgrade component. Representatives of both contractors assured the Minister of Energy and Green Transition, the Volta Region Minister, Traditional Authorities, and attendees of their commitment to complete the project within the required timeline to deliver better electricity supply.
