The GRIDCo Ladies Association (GRIDLASS), has once again joined the world to shine a light on a pertinent health concern that impact countless lives in Ghana and globally whiles blazing the message “Early Detection Saves lives”!

In collaboration with a team of medical professionals from MEDIFEM, GRIDLASS hosted an educational talk and free breast cancer screening for staff at Tema head office.

Breast cancer is the second most common cancer in the world, affecting every one in eight women in their lifetime, and by far the deadliest cancer in women, hence, early detection is critical and GRIDLASS is dedicated to spreading knowledge, offering support, and ensuring breast health is a priority for all staff in GRIDCo.

Dr. Delphina Obour of MEDIFEM explained to participants that although there is a steady decline of the mortality rate associated with Breast Cancer, the move by GRIDLASS to initiate an awareness campaign is still worth the effort.

Signs and symptoms related to the disease include lump or area of thickened tissue in either breast, change in the size or shape of one or both breasts, discharge from either of your nipples (which may be streaked with blood), discoloration of the skin, dimpling on the skin of your breasts, and change in the appearance of one’s nipple, such as appearing sunken into your breast.

Dr. Obour walked staff through what breast cancer is while indicating that men with breast tissue are at a higher risk of developing breast cancer than women. She described non-modifiable risk factors such as family history, genetic disposition, exposure to radiation and exposure to estrogen, as a causative factor to developing breast cancer. On the other hand, modifiable risk factors that individuals can alter include smoking, alcohol intake, weight gain among others.

Dr. Delphina highlighted treatment modalities like surgery, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, hormonal therapy and radiation therapy.

Meanwhile, the Ag. Chief Executive, Ing. Mark Baah in his remarks encouraged all staff to exploit the benefits of such educational events organised in the company and take these health issues serious. Ing. Baah urged all to be, “mindful of what we eat”, because such health-related issues are also linked to sedentary lifestyle and poor eating habits.
